How To Make Alternative Transportation The Primary Transportation: Mobis Bikestation Technology

What if cars were the least convenient form of transportation? In some cities this is the case, but in many it isn’t. In Los Angeles for instance, the idea of trying to get from Southbay to Hollywood without a car is a huge stretch for the average person. Not only would it take a ridiculous amount of time, but between trying to figure out the bus schedules, bus routes, and directions from wherever you’re coming from, the whole process feels like more trouble than it’s worth. In many places cars are just viewed as an easier and more flexible form of transportation. The result? More cars, more traffic, more congestion, and much more fossil fuel emissions.

So what’s the solution? The company “Mobis Transportation Alternatives” wants to flip the concept of automobile transportation on its head. With the simple goal of trying “to get more people using alternative transportation,” Mobis is using advanced bike-transit centers in strategic places within cities to make cars less convenient. These Bikestations will be maintained by daily, monthly, and yearly subscriptions paid by the bikers. Each station will consist of a bike storage system, a repair and upgrade system, and lockers. Everything is key activated and monitored to prevent the bike thefts and vandalism that is frequent in cities with high levels of bike transportation.

What makes the Mobis Bikestations so effective is that each station is greater than the sum of its parts. It’s not just a place to park bikes that also offers maintenance, it’s a way to connect different forms of transportation to allow  the system as a whole to improve. We expect big things from the Mobis team in the future so definitely check them out here!

Happy Friday boys and girls! Be safe!

Social Entrepreneurship Worldwide: South Africa

I always enjoy coming across articles about Social Entrepreneurship in other countries. It’s one thing to see it in your city; it’s inspiring and reminds you that there are many others out there that share your passion for the fusion of business and philanthropy. But whenever I see Social Entrepreneurship abroad it touches on a similar but different feeling. It’s similar in its reminder that there are people like us everywhere, but even more that Social Entrepreneurship/ Social Enterprise can literally CHANGE THE WORLD.

The article I read recently in BusinessDay was specifically on the Social Entrepreneurship realm of South Africa. A piece that instantly stood out was, “[in South Africa] there is a lack of confidence in both government and civil society to solve [their] problems… This has led experts to pin their hopes on the emergence of a strong class of social entrepreneurs — businesses that operate for the social good — to do the job”. Wow. Take a second to reread that. The new and growing class of social entrepreneurs is what people are putting their faith in order for South Africa to prosper. Even above Government and the Civil Society.

In many ways it reflects the shift in mentalities that many people have had since the worldwide recession. Governments are trusted less. Huge companies are trusted less. “Too big to fail” has been proven false. What people are putting their continued faith in worldwide are companies and organizations that have a mission of social benefit built into their venture at its core. With this stance the company cannot shift to shady practices because it would lose its business at the same time.

We are at an amazing time in human history and we can’t wait to push forward!

Social Entrepreneurs we salute you and the world is counting on you for a bright future,

Ranchers: A New Breed of Social Entrepreneurs

If you’ve been around the Upper and Lower Angels’ Knolls in downtown Los Angeles recently you might have seen something a little shocking: goats. In LA we have our own weird wildlife (the fabled giant LA sewer rats for one), but nothing like goats. It turns out the goat project is being put on by the Community Redevelopment Agency and is saving the city thousands of dollars. The alternative, of course, being being human workers (requiring pay) with gas powered weed whackers (requiring gasoline). Using the goat alternative, the CRA has helped save us money and yet another use of gasoline when there are healthier alternatives. For that we salute you Community Redevelopment Agency.

The goats have been brought up by the Environmental Land Management of San Diego after a standard construction style bidding process (capitalism and social responsibility at their finest). Almost half of the 100 goats are related to one another making the trip feel less stressful on the goats being with more familiar groups. This is the 3rd time in three years the goats have been brought up from San Diego to help clear the dried grass of the Angels’ Knolls and this year they may make record time.

ROOZT Recap: The Do Something! Awards on VH1

So in case you missed it Monday night, the Do Something! awards were on VH1. After myself and Christina went to the Do Something! bootcamp this weekend, all of us at the ROOZT office were excited to see the winners of the awards show. There were some definite surprises but in the end it was a fun little ceremony with an awesome cause behind it. Without further adieu, the winners:

THE Do Something! Award:

Jessica Posner

From her own bio :

Sad fact: 66% of girls in Kibera (the largest slum in Africa) trade sex for food as early as age six and only 8% of women in Kibera ever attend school. Jessica co-founded Shining Hope for Communities to combat gender inequity and poverty in Kibera. Through the Kibera School for Girls, the first free school in Kibera, and the Shining Community Center, Jessica has helped over 5,700 residents gain education and employment.

Awesome girl that’s making an amazing impact. She won the $100,000 prize and the top honors at the event. A BIG congratulations to her from ROOZT! For this achievement and her efforts in Kibera she is also our WOMAN OF THE DAY.

.

Do Something! Movie Star of the Year:

Leonardo DiCaprio

And no not for Inception (although it might have changed your life for better or worse). His most noted contribution was his $1 million donation to the Haiti Relief Fund as well as his continued Executive Producer role of “Greensburg”. Mr. DiCaprio beat out Jessica Biel, Matt Damon, Salma Hayek, and Natalie Portman for his title as the reigning Do Something! movie star of the year.

.

.

.

.

.

Do Something! City of the Year:

Austin, Texas

This was a shocker to me. I wasn’t aware how awesome the city of Austin was. The local slogan of “keep Austin weird” could refer to that Austin has a huge car sharing program in the midst of the state with the largest average cars. Or it could refer to the fact that the city is the only major Texan city with no ordinance against women being topless in public. Either way the huge amount of bike users and social entrepreneurs have earned Austin the title of the Do Something! City of the Year. Runners up included Portland, Salt Lake City, and Boston.

.

.

.

.

Do Someting! Twitterer of the Year:

Alyssa Milano

Alyssa Milano has been tremendously successful in using Twitter as a tool to raise money for Charity: Water, a nonprofit working to supply clean water to those in need. On her birthday, she asked her followers to donate money to the charity instead of purchasing birthday gifts. Today she has raised $92,568 for the charity.

The runner up twitterers include Hugh Jackman and Edward Norton (who raised $1.2 million for the Maasai Wilderness Conversation Trust).

.

.

.

Do Something! with Style Award:

Tyra Banks

First off, congrats to Tyra. The reason for her award was her mission of “celebrating inner and outer beauty and owning and rocking what you’ve got.” I think that translates to wanting to end the unhealthy expectations of women’s bodies but I’m not sure… Ms. Banks beat out Donatella Versace and Victoria Beckham.

.

.

.

.

.

Do Something! Comedian of the Year:

Kathy Griffin

Apparently Ms. Griffin’s big contribution this year was getting a pap smear poolside at a hotel in Westwood. Her cause was her “Smear Campaign” for increasing awareness about different types of cervical cancer. A very aggressive awareness campaign to say the least. Despite the aggressiveness of Kathy’s Smear campaign the cause is awesome and admirable.

Griffin beat out Eddie Izzard who ended up running 42 marathons in 53 days for the sake of Sports Relief and Ellen Degeneres who auctioned her wardrobe with the money going to the Humane Society. It will take a lot for someone to top the public pap smear bar raised by Kathy Griffin.

.

.

.

Do Something! TV Show of the Year:

Glee

I personally have never watched the show but love their idea of auctioning screenings and backstage type of tickets. Glee raised money for the Grammy Foundation and Grammy In The Schools by selling preview screening packages to the public. Little things like this add up to make a huge change and a what cost? Virtually none.

Among the runner ups, American Idol’s “Idol Gives Back” raised over $45 million. Yes over $45 million.

.

.

.

.

Do Something! Athlete of the Year:

Hannah Teter

Wow if anyone deserved an award it’s Hannah. She wins by a landslide. It’s to even start with her. For one she sells underwear online (called Sweet Cheeks), 40% of the proceeds going to benefit Doctors Without Borders. On her personal website, Ms. Teter sells maple syrup to help provide water to a village in Kenya (I will definitely be ordering some soon), Ben & Jerry’s has released a flavor which she endorses with all proceeds going to charity, and last but not least Hannah has raised over $250,000 for Kirindon. An amazing Social Entrepreneur who challenges us all to step up our philanthropic game.

Runners up include Reggie Bush for his Haiti relief and New Orleans High School Relief, Derek Jeter, and even Ryan Sheckler…

.

.

Do Something! Music Artist of the Year:

The Jonas Brothers

Apparently the Brother’s Jonas do more than captivate the tweenage female market nationwide. And apparently they are so highly regarded in the field of Diabetes benefit that they testified before congress to promote further diabetes research. Do they testify individually or as a group?… Either way I’m proud of the Jonas’. On top of their Diabetes support, they have also helped other organizations including the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund, the Special Olympics, and multiple appearances on shows and fundraisers. Congratulations to the Jonas Brothers from all of us at the ROOZT team.

The big name runner ups include Lady Gaga for donating the proceeds of one of her shows to Haiti relief and Shakira for her charity work with both the Chilean and Haitian earthquakes.

.

.

Do Something! Docu Style award:

I Am Because We Are

This documentary follows the lives of orphans living in Malawi. Inspiring, shocking, painful, “I Am Because We Are” is a wake up call for the Social Entrepreneurship industry and philanthropy groups worldwide. Check out the website here. Definitely a must see documentary

.

.

.

.

.

.

Do Something! Charities on Facebook award:

The Bali Orphanage

I wasn’t personally familiar with this organization. Do Something’s descpription:

The children of the Tuka, Bali, Indonesia orphanage have a “fan” page on Facebook. The orphanage is located in a remote village and had few visitors. Once Facebook users started to discover their page, it took off rapidly and now has over 1,500 members, many of whom joined after asking how they could come meet the children and bring gifts.

An amazing story about how social media can have a positive impact on the world if applied correctly. In the wake of all the Facebook controversies with privacy it’s refreshing to see the amazing potential that people wanting to do good can have through new mediums.

.

A huge congratulations from ROOZT to all winners of the Do Something! Awards. The show was fun and went well and we look forward to seeing the winners next year!

Cheers,

The ROOZT Team

*** ChessBoxing 4 Charity: We’ve teamed up with The Tiziano Project (an incredible non-profit organization that empowers journalists in war-torn countries. Check them out if you have some time, they’ll blow you away) for the first ever ChessBoxing 4 Charity event. Crazy, right? ChessBoxing is a true test of brains versus brawn: a new sport that makes competitors alternate rounds of boxing with speed chess…it sounds easy, until you have to try strategizing your next chess move after getting punched in the face repeatedly by your opponent. The night will feature Miss Malibu vs. Miss Hollywood (yes, we’re serious) and Andrew “The Fightin’ Philanthropist” McGregor vs. John Rude, with our good buddy Tower (of American Gladiators) serving as MC. You can watch videos of ChessBoxing featured on Carson Daly, The Colbert Report, ESPN, and others here.

The event will be held on September 23rd at Les Deux nightclub in Hollywood, California. Tickets are $15 pre-sale and $20 at the door, with all proceeds going straight to The Tiziano Project. If you’re in the area, please check it out! We promise it’ll be a great evening, and you’ll be doing your part to support an incredibly worthwhile cause. You can learn more about the event and pre-order your tickets here: http://roozt.com/chessboxing

*** Keep In Touch: Hit up our Facebook page and Twitter! We’re constantly updating both with hot news, fresh contests and sweepstakes, blogs, and other stuff to keep you in the loop. Every now and again, we’ll just be giving stuff away to our followers, so don’t miss out! Not to mention, it’s a great way to let us know what you think. Want to see eco-friendly surfboard deals, or clothing from companies that support humanitarian initiatives? Shoot us a message! And who knows, you might even make a few new like-minded friends while you’re there.

We’re launching in August, and have hundreds of cool vendors lining up left and right. For example, just this week Sole Bicycles hopped on board, and will be offering their awesome roadbikes at insane discounts. One of our biggest pledges at ROOZT is to individually tailor your deals to what you want. For example, if you’re a dude, we won’t waste your daily alert on a mani/pedi package like some other deal sites (cough cough). The more you visit our site, the more we’ll have an idea of what you want.

Additionally, Auren Kaplan of The Social Enterprise Exchange recently wrote an amazing article on Roozt.com, that we encourage you to check out in your free time. It paints a great picture of what we’re all about and where we’re going…

Think that’s it for this time around. Don’t forget to keep checking back for the latest updates on featured products, contests, and more of our inspiring partners. All of us at ROOZT are super pumped about everything going on in the next few weeks, and we hope you are too! We’ll talk to you soon and in the meantime we’ll be hard at work getting you great deals from inspiring companies…

Much love,

One-Earth.com: Everything from Electric Porsche Conversion to Organic Beer and Wine Recipes (Just Don’t Mix Them Please ;-) )

As a company keeping constant tabs on the heartbeat of the Social Entrepreneur / Social Enterprise Business Movement, our team at ROOZT reviews hundreds of sites and products daily. Most are great ideas with an even greater mission. To see the rapid shift toward more responsible business practices is truly inspiring and keeps us all sane and focused on the movement we’re a part of.

That said, there are always companies that stand out. Sure, there are the TOMS shoes and TreeHugger.coms that stand out because they’re more in the public’s eye, but when a new company emerges with the ability to drastically change the daily lives of Americans for the better it gets our full attention (and a dedicated post).

Recently while doing some research, I stumbled onto the site One-Earth.com and instantly had a “this is long overdue” sigh of relief. The site format and idea is simple: basically a Wikipedia style platform where both users and administrators have the ability to update information for free on a wide range of environmentally friendly solutions to daily problems. This is huge. Think about the implications of this. There have always been more environmentally conscious communities that share their experiences with one another to work on projects that result in a cleaner, healthier environment. But on the contrary there are also communities where things like sustainable living and carbon footprint reductions couldn’t be further from their daily lives. Even within those communities there’s likely to be many individuals who would make more environmentally conscious decisions if they were educated about them. Furthermore, from a financial/time/health perspective, sustainable practices are much more efficient. People focused on the WIIFM (What’s in it for me?) angle suddenly have a reason to live a more sustainable lifestyle. The only thing lacking till this point was a place to compile the information for people.

“So what? I’m sure people could find the information on the internet for themselves”

I’m sure they could too. Maybe even in one place (although I haven’t seen another source and I spend a ridiculous amount of time scanning the web every day). The second reason why One-Earth has the ability to revolutionize American’s daily lives is because the site breaks information down into cities. That means information on how and where to compost, locations of restaurants serving locally grown food, lists of CSAs and Food Coops and anything else a local needs to practice sustainability to the highest degree.

A recent study showed that given the same product with a similar price, 89% of people would go with the one that supported a cause or was more environmentally friendly (I’ll find the source in the next day or so). In the end there will always be people that just don’t care about issues like sustainable living no matter how many different ways it’s explained to them. For the rest, the 89%, there is now a center of information that gives anyone in the world the ability to use and add information to slowly shift human culture towards healthier habits.

Check out One-Earth.com and don’t forget to post your own sustainable solutions!

Much love and happy weekend,

ND with the ROOZT team

If Chess And Boxing Had A Baby…. It Would Save The World

Ok maybe not save the world, but drastically improve it. How? Because the emerging sport of Chessboxing has a very influential supporter: Andrew McGregor, the President and Founder of the Tiziano Project. With the strong link between Chessboxing and Andrew “The Fightin’ Philanthropist” McGregor, the sport looks like it will have an entertaining future while providing a bigger cause for fans to support. But lets not get ahead of ourselves….

What exactly is Chessboxing??

All the time he’s boxing, he’s thinking. All the time he was thinking, I was hitting him
-Jack Dempsey

Very much what it sounds like actually (that’s the strange part). In the words of the Los Angeles Chessboxing Club:

Chessboxing is a new sport in which one round of chess is followed by one round of boxing in alternating rounds for 6 rounds of chess, 5 rounds of boxing. A round of chess takes 4 minutes and boxing rounds are 3 minutes. Each competitor has 12 minutes on the chess timer. A checkmate or knockout wins.

When I first had someone give me an intro to the sport it didn’t seem that complicated. But then I started thinking how much I suck at chess… And how much time boxing took when I used to box… People have spent lifetimes trying to master each individually; the combination of the two makes it so much sweeter. You could be reading the board and realize your opponent will have you in the next 5 turns. But then you’re saved by the bell… That next round of boxing you should be doing much less dancing and much more hammering. A well placed haymaker could win you the fight and turn the chess game into an afterthought. On the flipside you still need to keep strategizing because if the next round of chess comes you’ve got to be calculated to avoid check mate. Therein lies the problem… The constant shift between between different parts of the brain forces the Chessboxer to have complete control over their mind or risk not being “present” in the round.
From firsthand experience I can tell you some of the best boxed rounds I’ve had have left me in a state of “what just happened?” (And not because I got hit in the head too much). On the contrary, professional chess players talk about the “perfect equation”, a state of complete immersion into the game where they can almost feel the board and every possibility. This state of complete immersion in Chessboxing becomes increasingly difficult as the fight progresses and in the end, mental fortitude becomes the foundation for success.

All intricate details aside, the sport is RAD to watch. The chess allows the fighters a few minutes of rest so the boxing is fast and furious. And if a player has a bad round of chess he comes out head hunting like a banshee the next round. After a tough round of getting his noggin jarred, a player may not mentally be up to par chess wise and get check mated.

We like the sport so much we’ve teamed up with both The Tiziano Project and Chessboxing for a big event coming up. More on that later…

In the meantime check out a few videos to see Chessboxing firsthand:

It’s like losing your virginity with 50 of your friends watching”

“The first rule of Chessboxing is tell everyone you know that you do it”

PS We’re doing a promotion for a free iPad drawing if you refer 5 friends. I literally have 2 iPads sitting in my lap and I don’t know if I can keep myself from opening them. Samuel Dalembert is The Man of The Day

In the midst of the chaos shown on the news surrounding the earthquake in Haiti, it was hard to know really who was actually doing what. The media seemed just as confused. There was even controversy as to whether the relief funds were actually reaching their destinations…

All the depressing negativity aside, this was an opportunity to see who in the public eye would step up and take charge of getting Haiti relief in the wake of the massive quake. While many did answer the call and step up, one name in particular stood out: Samuel Dalembert. While others were tweeting, he was making calls to his homeland, while others were giving comments to the press he was giving press conferences before games, and while others in the spotlight were urging people to donate money he was setting up his own foundation.

He came up recently in an office discussion of who stepped up big in the wake of some of the huge natural disasters in recent times and for his efforts, Samuel Dalembert is the” Man of The Day”

Social Entrepreneurs Lending A Cup of Sugar Nationwide

A while ago I read an article on a little Social Entrepreneurship Startup called “NeighborGoods”. The company is a self proclaimed “safer, friendlier Craigslist” focusing on individual communities within a larger city. What NeighborGoods offers specifically is a service that allows these communities to share, rent, and trade anything and everything imaginable.

Think about it. You buy a new piece of furniture that you need to assemble and realize you don’t have a screw driver. Your options?

a.) Buy a power drill that will save you time but sit unused until your next furniture purchase 3 years later
b.) Buy a basic screwdriver to save money but end up spending an extra 4 hours on the project

And now…

c.) Check NeighborGoods for someone in your area that you could rent or borrow from!

The implications of ideas like this are HUGE. A more community approach to resources like lawnmowers, tools, kitchen items, etc that are rarely used but needed occasionally by all can have a huge impact. Not only could this lead to less landfill garbage in the future, but a community actively engaging in the sharing process gets people out of their homes and more involved with each other. The time of asking your neighbor for a cup of sugar suddenly doesn’t feel so far away…

NeighborGoods recently went nationwide after starting here in Los Angeles so a BIG congratulations to them. Check out their site and help support your community while cutting back on landfill waste! Oh yeah, and save a few bucks at the same time ;-)

Cheers,

The ROOZT Team
