Arifa’s Story: How A Woman From the Indian Slums Supports Herself

Meet Arifa.

She is a twenty-eight year old woman who lives in the slums of the Kadapa District in Andhra Pradesh, India. As with most slum children, Arifa was never educated and cannot read or write. She has an eight year old daughter and currently lives with her mother. Arifa’s husband broke his legs in an accident and his medical bills put the family in severe debt…

Her husband now works in Kuwait but barely earns enough money to cover the cost of the interest on the debts, leaving the family with nothing to live on. Arifa was in dire straits when she arrived for training and work. She had suffered two miscarriages and the death of one child, and was struggling to feed her daughter and herself. Her daughter was sent to the local village school and was not receiving a proper education.
.
Arifa’s life has changed for the better since becoming a One Thread Fair Trade artisan. With the fair wages she earns, she is able to feed her family and improve their living conditions. Her daughter now attends the Aarti School in the city of Kadapa and is becoming a good student. When One Thread Fair Trade asked Arifa how she feels about herself now, she answered that she feels good that she is able to stand on her own feet.
.
Arifa believes in family. Her dream is for her daughter to become an educated, successful woman and grow up to lead better life than what she had. Arifa is a wonderful mother and we are privileged to have her cushions featured on Roozt.com!
.

The Social Enterprise State of the Union 2010

We’re onto something here. We as a community of social entrepreneurs, socially conscious individuals, eco-minded shoppers, people supporting inspiring causes, and individuals determined to change the world for the better. This is not a trend and it’s no longer something that a small percentage of the population is interested in. Philanthropy, eco-friendly behavior, higher standards of ethics, and humanitarian efforts are becoming ingrained into the culture of our society at large. Like technology, each generation is moving forward by leaps and bounds. And like technology we will see efforts increase exponentially. More causes, more funding, more help. If you share these views, the following stats will be breath of fresh air. If not, take note and be inspired.

83% of all consumers want retailers that benefit causes.

- People support companies that support bigger causes. Plain and simple.

85% of US consumers have a more positive image of a company when it
supports a cause they care about.

- People are bombarded daily with branding from hundreds of companies. What’s an easy standard by which to judge the legitimacy of a company? What causes it supports.

80% of all consumers (79% of general pop. 90% of Gen Y) are likely to
switch brands, similar in price and quality, to one that supports a
cause.

- Two products side by side with similar properties. One supports a cause, one is completely for profit. 80% of people choose the former. It’s a no brainer. In the past there weren’t always socially conscious companies as a direct substitute to others. Now there are, and people are choosing them more often. Gen Y is leading the charge meaning that the future is only becoming more savvy shoppers.

75% of all consumers want companies to support humanitarian
and environmental causes

- People have more choices than ever. And with those choices they are beginning to expect companies to do more than make a good product. Like support humanitarian and environmental causes.

31% of Americans say that an economic downturn in among the most
important times for companies to support social and environmental needs

- A business environment focused on using more of a group mentality is spreading. As a country and world we need to advance together. This makes for a stronger economy and better standard of living.

81% of US consumers believe companies should financially
support causes at the same level or higher during an economic downturn.

- The world was turned upside down with the Great Recession. We’re still feeling the effects of the collapses in the financial and Real Estate sectors. The old ways of doing things failed and that mentality has stuck. Consumers want more. And if you think your times are hard, there are people being hit 1,000 times harder. The time for giving back has never been greater than right now.

61% of US consumers are willing to purchase from a new brand (brand
they have never heard of) due to the brand supporting a cause

- With the major shift in ideals that came with the recession came the willingness to branch out and do things differently. This includes brands. Think your business cards are cool? Recycled is cooler. And cheaper in most cases. People are more willing to change their brand loyalty than ever and to companies that have a bigger goal than a product or service.

41% of consumers (53% of millennials (ages 18-24)) have purchased a
product in the past year BECAUSE it was associated with a social or
environmental issue

Some causes are so good that the item you pay for is a bonus. People want inspiration and to give inspiration.

Where does that leave us now? In a place and time where we can literally change the foundations of business and philanthropy. A new perspective is already in place. Now it’s up to us to make it happen.

Join the Roozt team in helping to make a difference. If you are a Nonprofit who could benefit from extra contributions or a vendor with a socially conscious product shoot us an email at info@roozt.com. We want to build and strengthen this community as much as possible.

Act Bolder – Take a Challenge, Get a Reward

Everyone wants to do good, or at least, they try to.

How many times do you hear yourself saying “I’m going to carpool everyday to reduce my carbon footprint!” or “ I’m going to start eating healthier!” but end up going back to your old ways after a week or so. At Roozt, we understand that we’re all busy people, and it’s hard to commit to doing good all the time when you don’t see results right away. Here is where Bolder comes in.
Bolder will challenge you to do something positive. You can sign up for the challenge, and as their tagline says, “Do Good. Get Rewarded.” If the challenge is met, everyone who participates gets rewarded! And I don’t mean you get a measly digital sticker or screensaver for your good work. After you complete the challenge and report back, you get free coupons and discounts to businesses like Seventh Generation, Sports Basement and Whole Foods. Talk about instant gratification.

How to Get Your Socially Conscious Startup Funded: The ASE Way

First you gotta ask yourself, is my startup ready to be funded? REALLY ready. How’s your elevator pitch? Are all your docs in order? If a group of investors called TODAY and were gung ho about what you’re doing but just needed to see everything from your press kit to your executive summary, would you be able to deliver? If you answered no to any of the above, now is the perfect time to organize the troops so that when the time comes you’ll be ready to make things happen!

We came across an organization a while ago that was helping social entrepreneurs and nonprofits achieve this goal and have been following them ever since. Academies for Social Entrepreneurship is an organization that takes great ideas and early stage orgs and takes them to the next level. It’s easy to lose sight of the big picture in the midst of the daily grind of a new startup. ASE steps in and gives these small operations the guidance they need to get funded, get organized, and reach their full potential to make a huge impact. What an inspiring way to use ASE’s consulting skills!

If you’re a small nonprofit or social entrepreneurship startup you absolutely need to keep them on your radar. The information and experience their team possesses is incredible and with the constant events sponsored by Academies for Social Entrepreneurship it would be silly to not take them up on the free knowledge.

Some upcoming events to check out:

Social Enterprise Venture Competition Finals

10 nonprofits are going toe to toe in a venture competition showing their business plans and innovative ideas in front of a panel of experienced investors. This is an incredible opportunity for those who have business plans, early startups or ideas that need a little fine tuning. See how the professional investors think and meet some of the people behind the next generation of inspiring nonprofits and startups. Check out the event here and you might just see some of the Roozt team there! The finals for this competition have been anticipated and talked about by everyone from Tech Coast Angels to many entrepreneurship programs in universities nationwide!

Social Innovation Fast Pitch RooztSocial Innovation Fast Pitch

Registration: Open Now
Event: October 21 @ USC

My building has an elevator that takes residents from their apartments to the parking garage. In that elevator alone I have found clients, designers, developers, and customers just by being social with people while we get from point A to point B. While the term “Elevator Pitch” doesn’t have to literally include an elevator ride, the skill of being able to condense the months or years of work you’ve put into your company into a 1-2 minute pitch is essential.

With the world as fast paced as it is today (and only speeding up), people don’t have time for a long explanation of what your company does. With a hard end time (aka an elevator ride or a panel with a stop watch), you’re forced to pick out the most essential and important points of what you do. This is exactly what the Social Innovation Fast Pitch helps you achieve asap. The events culminate into a final presentation with the winner taking home $20,ooo for the nonprofit or social venture they’re involved with. Check out the event here and definitely go to fine tune your elevator pitch!

Quit Talkin’ Trash & Get Crafty!

The school year is in full throttle and decorating your apartment has quickly fallen to the bottom of your agenda.  In fact, you no longer even see your roommates during the week.  “We never hang out anymore!” Heard that before.  “I want to have people over, but our apartment is kind of boring and I can’t afford Crate and Barrel, Urban Outfitters, or even Target decor.”  Neither can we.

Fun, planet-friendly solution:  Why not save some money, bond with your friends and roommates, and spruce up your apartment, all in one fell swoop?  Put on a movie this weekend and make some tea-tin candles, jewelry magnets, and a frisbee bird feeder for your porch.  Country Living has 31 chic ideas for “recycled crafts,” and lucky for you they’re all right here at your fingertips (literally)!

Just as a reminder to always remember your four R’s: Roozt, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (in that order of priority).  Enjoy!
Peace,

Entrepreneurs Changing the World

HUGE news coming today from the Roozt Team!

In the social entrepreneurship realm there’s an event we’ve been waiting for for a while now: the “Entrepreneurs Changing the World” event hosted by StartingBloc LA. This event being held at USC on September 28 is making BIG waves in our industry and the fact that it’s being put together by the folks at StartingBloc guarantees it will be a must-attend event for the LA crowd. We were already excited for this event but recent news made the Roozt Team twice as excited…. Our CEO Brent Freeman just confirmed a speaking and panel position!! The already amazing panel will now be getting the expertise of our Chief Roozter.

Here’s a quick intro to the speakers of “Entrepreneurs Changing the World”:

Adlai Wertman

Founding Director of USC Society and Business Lab

-USC has some of the top Business and Entrepreneurship programs in the nation. Adlai is a great speaker.

Jonathan Greenblatt

Founder of Ethos Water and Our Good Works, UCLA Lecturer

-The first thing you see on the Ethos site is “Our mission helping children get clean water”. This is achieved through a $0.05 donation per water purchased. Ethos was acquired by Starbucks in 2005 who has donated over $10 million to the mission of getting children clean water. We’re super excited to hear from Jonathan Greenblatt! Check out Ethos Water here

Elizabeth Amini

Founder & CEO of Anti-Aging Games and Brighter World Consulting

-Anti-Aging Games really is an amazing program. The site is a system of games that exercise the mind in a way that keeps it at peak performance. With a list of contributors ranging from the Atari founder to Harvard PHD’s to Alzheimer’s and Dementia specialists, the Anti-Aging Games  system is more than capable. Check out the Anti-Aging Games system here and get your brain in shape!

Brent Freeman

Founder and CEO of Roozt.com, Executive Board Member of Trojan CEO Network

-Last but not least the fearless leader of Roozt! The team was already planning to attend the event but with Brent as a speaker we’re twice as excited! Working with hundreds of vendors, Roozt is not only at the forefront of the industry, but also bringing smaller companies into the public spotlight to join the movement. Roozt’s goal is to make entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship one in the same: that the business climate could make socially responsible behavior a standard and not an afterthought. Through the boosting of our vendor’s sales and exposure, we are giving the world a chance to find the responsible products they can’t find anywhere else. Brent has been talking about how proud of his Alma Mater he is for stepping out and hosting an event like “Entrepreneurs Changing the World”. USC has been respected in the business community for a long time but having them be at the forefront social entrepreneurship by hosting events is awesome!

Get more info on the event here and don’t forget to say hi to the Roozt team while you’re there!

“Wear Your Values” – Autonomie Project

What do Converse and PETA have in common?  Well, not so much, but wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could find classic low-tops that were certified vegan (not to mention fair trade, organic, and eco-friendly)?  Have no fear…

Just three short years ago, Autonomie Project set out to provide a hub for affordable and  responsible shopping.  From organic tees to vegan footwear to fair trade handbags, Autonomie Project has grown to do just that.  And they have stylin’ clothes and shoes for toddlers (seriously, they’re a-dawr-able, go look).

But my favorite thing about this biz is the option to custom screen on organic and eco-friendly shoes and tees.  Every year, I accumulate about another 20 giveaway tees that were made in China, shipped to my campus, and thrown in my face – I’m sure all you college kids out there can relate.  This club, that sorority, the “school spirit” tees at basketball games – there’s no escaping it.  Ever wonder where those come from and how they’re made? And how many are made?  Imagine if every campus across the country switched to organic, domestically-produced t-shirts.  Not only would such a climate-friendly switch be a lovely soil siesta, it would also support our domestic organic farmers.  Be sure to add that to your club meeting agenda.

Plus, AP gives back to the world, raising awareness to inspire buyers to take action in their own lives and donating a percentage of funds to projects that support development where it’s needed most (e.g., providing a steady and safe water supply to a small village, building a health clinic -  you get the picture).

The more I look at this site, the more I want to rock its style and throw my hard-earned money at its causes.  In fact, I’m off to do that right now.

Check out the Autonomie Project site here and join the cause!

10 Best Socially Conscious Colleges

As much as we hate to admit it around the office, fall is quickly closing in on us. Not to play Debbie Downer, but you’ve probably also noticed that the days are getting shorter, the kids are headed back to school, and Halloween displays are already up in full force at your local grocery store [insert eye roll at the absurdity of holiday commercialism here]. But if you’re a high school senior, the cooler weather and crunch of falling leaves also mean the dreaded college application process. And while we can’t write your admissions essays for you, we CAN throw in our two cents about some of the top “Green Colleges” in America. Roozt is no Princeton Review by any means, but feel free to use this as your entirely unofficial guide to some cool off-beat schools and programs, from around the country.

(Much kudos to our buddies over at TheDailyGreen.com for the inspiration!)

College of the Atlantic, Bar Harbor ME

The first U.S. college to go carbon neutral, COA educates several hundred students in Human Ecology, or the study of our impact on the planet (with lessons in green building, land conservation, and toxin elimination). And with only locally sourced, organic meals on the dining menu, it sure beats crappy dorm food! http://www.coa.edu

Warren Wilson College, Swannanoa NC

WWC takes “sustainability” above and beyond, getting all food and lumber from their own organic gardens and forests (kid you not, even their chainsaws run on soy oil). Their campus vehicles run on biodiesel, and all streetlights and carts are solar-powered. Not to mention, students recycle and compost as much as they can, and Warren Wilson even has a “free store” where the gently used items that one student drops off are another peer’s treasure find. http://www.warren-wilson.edu

Evergreen State College, Olympia WA

Arguably one of the prettiest campus settings, the grounds include 800 acres of forests and beaches, and a full-fledged organic farm. There, students can study everything from organic farming, to ecology, to conservation. The campus also boasts electric cars, 100% clean power, and green buildings. http://www.evergreen.edu

Berea College, Berea KY

Ever heard of a sustainable EcoVillage on a college campus? If not, then you clearly haven’t heard of Berea. With the “no biggie” goals of a 75% reduction in energy and h20 use, and 50% reduction in solid waste, they are clearly some of the most determined of the bunch. The Village also uses only eco-friendly appliances, solar panels, heavy insulation, wind-power, and rainwater collectors. Now that is green living! http://www.berea.edu

Harvard University, Cambridge MA

Ever thought you’d see this one coming? In case those overachievers weren’t already some of the smartest brains in the country, they had to go and add “leaders in sustainability” to their resume. One of the top purchasers of renewable energy, the campus also uses only recycled paper (and prints on both sides), has reduced waste by 73%, and converted school trucks to run on spare vegetable oil from the dining halls. http://www.harvard.edu

One interesting thing to note: for how much of a West Coast stereotype there is surrounding “going green,” the majority of Top Green Colleges reside on the Atlantic. Just goes to show that this is no longer the “hippies in Berkley” movement of the 1960s. You don’t have to be a treehugger to help the environment…sustainability is here to stay!

CG with the Roozt team

PS 5 days til launch! Stay tuned for the big day ;-)
